Make Believe Bonus: The Time I Was Sorta A Tour Manager
Everything That Can Go Wrong, Will Go Wrong
Being a freelancer, I’ve been more or less forced to take on many roles over my career deviating from “writing stuff.” Having to challenge every opportunity dangled in front of you leads to some great stories — ask me about the time I spent six hours in a meeting room having to make a total of two five minute phone calls in that time — but also helps to develop empathy for others, especially in the music industry. Stepping into PR writing jobs or having to help coordinate interviews for artists reveals how tough the situation must be for people doing this daily.
Yet the most sympathy I have is reserved for those serving as tour managers for artists. I once took on this very job for a pair of international acts a little over ten years ago…and let me tell you, I would never do it again. Salute to the folks making this their life.
