“Move closer to the front!” The HMV Shibuya staff takes advantage of a slight moment of silence near the start of duo PICNIC YOU’s in-store live to nudge the crowd closer to the ad-hock stage, which is really just the corner where magazines and books are usually displayed.

This results in me…someone usually thrilled to be closer to the back due to the combination of enjoying seeing the full picture of a performance and worries that I’m slightly too tall…thrust up to the very front. I am like a pinky away from touching either member of PICNIC YOU. As they really get into their set, I’m almost uncomfortably close to them, in the same way I’d feel weird being front and center for a photo at some distant acquaintances birthday party.

Turns out this surprise intimacy is exactly what I needed after a rough stretch.
