Jim O'Rourke speaks Japanese in a very midwestern way. At the intermission of improvisational trio Kafka’s Ibiki’s November 10 show at Adrift, he briefly talked to the crowd in a tone that was hushed but jovial, like talking to your neighbor in Skokie early in the morning as not to accidentally wake anyone up. It helped that the subject was…for reasons not clear to me…chocolate chip cookies. It’s hard not to sound sweet in any language when that’s the topic.
